The H1N1 Virus – Facts About a Possible Pandemic

H1N1 influenza is a virus that attacks the human immune system and can cause serious secondary illnesses. In extreme cases the victim can die. This influenza gets its name from a type of flu virus that affects pigs. Of course swine flu virus resembles that of the one that infects swine. The abbreviation H1N1 is the official World Health Organization (WHO) name of the virus and is derived from the medical terms hemaglutinin type 1 and neuraminidase type 1.

There was a misconception that one could contract H1N1 through the intake of pork and while the name is derived from the animal itself, cooked pork products are safe to be eaten.

Swine influenza is transmitted from person to person just like any other type of flu virus. You can become infected from contaminated surfaces, virus particles in the room, contact with infected persons or their belongings. Due to this fact, it is not enough to simply wear a surgical mask alone – you should thoroughly clean your hands often so you do not pick up the virus. H1N1 can survive on fabrics for over 12 hours and on less porous surfaces for about 2 days. The usual emphasis on face masks is because you can avoid touching objects but you can’t refrain from breathing the air around you.

If someone has H1N1 influenza they will start to show the symptoms of regular flu. These people will have fever and sore throat. These folks may also not be able to breathe properly and may have a headache. In most cases, they will feel cold and may vomit.

For medical personnel in pandemic areas or working in close proximity with affected victims, a mask will provide the best barrier to airborne contamination as it has special fibers to sieve off the virus and neutralize it.

Since the virus is generally spread through the air, overcrowding should be mitigated in those areas where there are reported incidences. If you are not a part of the emergency response in these areas then you should keep clear of such places.

There are many types of N95 face masks used to prevent infection. The kind you select will depend primarily on your particular situation and how comfortable you will be in wearing them. You should go for the style that has 2 straps for attachment to the head. There are also those with an adjustable nose bridge. There is yet another one that has a one way valve to enable you to breathe easily. Another type has ear loops.

There are many ways to treat swine flu. The most common way is with the use of anti-viral medications such as Tamiflu. Some infected victims are able to recover without the need for medication at all. A serious effort is being made to develop a vaccine so that people can be protected effectively, but that might take many months, as trials are still ongoing.

In the possible event of swine influenza virus epidemic, you need to stay calm and keep yourself abreast of government updates. Follow the instructions given by health officials and keep away from overcrowded locations.
